India's mines capital famous as city of coal,Dhanbad, came into existenceas a police district in the year 1928 as a part of Manbhum district having its headquarters in Purulia (now in West Bengal). However, on October 24, 1956 Dhanbad was notified as a full-fledged district.
Dhanbad Police is always ready to serve the people. One can contact the police officials without any fear and hesitation and apprise them of his/her problems. The policemen and officers of the district would be happy to help and solve the problems of the people. For the last three years the extremist and criminal activities have remained well under control. Several important cases have been successfully detected and solved. It's all due to the unceasing co-operation, co-ordination and warm affection offered by the people of Dhanbad. Most of the cases of dacoity, robbery and murder were detected. Inter state dacoity gang was busted. Two major bank robbery cases were detected, two dacoits were killed and we recovered Rs 32.5 lakhs along with 9mm pistol.

With the help of qualitative investigation, veteran criminals who were responsible
for a series of crimes were arrested. This has enhanced the morale of the district police. During the year 2007, emphasis was laid on qualitative investigation of cases and special efforts and measures were taken towards disposal of pending cases.
Against naxals, Special Operations, Inter district and Inter state Operations were vigorously conducted in the affected areas. As a result, no extremist related violence took place throughout the year. During the course of operations, huge number of arms, cartridges and explosive materials have been recovered. Last year in July Dhanbad police recovered 18 bags of 7200 gelatin sticks. CPI[Maoist] central committee member Pramod Misra was arrested along with informative laptop and literature. In all naxal affected Police Station areas
of this district, a lot of work has been done through Community Policing. Football tournaments, cricket matches, Jhumar competitions, debates were organised in which a large number of people participated.
As a part of community policing, during the year 2007, extremely poor and ackward people/ students were identified under SRE scheme. As per their need dhoties, sarees, torches, copies/note books, pencils, school bags, pens, blankets, footballs, jerseys, boots, Tshirts, leaf making machines, sets of local bow and arrows, Manipuri bows, Manipuri arrows, target bulls and other items have been distributed. Apart from these, sewing machines, cricket kits, instrument boxes and skipping ropes were also made available to the persons who needed them the most. Under community policing, public grievances have been addressed instantly by holding Janta Durbars in extremist affected Police Stations of Tundi and Topchanchi. This has increased the confidence and trust of people in Police and in turn Police is getting vital and important inputs about extremists. With unceasing cooperation of the people of the locality, law and order is normal and crime situation is under control. Since people of Dhanbad are very hard working, righteous, sensitive and co-operative, we have also succeeded in maintaining an excellent law and order situation and created an environment of peace, security, brotherhood and friendliness.
It is my firm belief that Dhanbad Police will keep on getting the same co-operation from the public in future. I express my deep and sincere gratitude for the affection shown and trust reposed by the public. I pray for the well being of all and wish peaceful, happy and prosperous life for the people of Dhanbad. |

The crime scenario of this district is quite normal. In the preceding year 2007, most of the murders, dacoities and robberies were successfully detected and the concerned criminals were charge sheeted. Crime graph has declined in the major heads of property related offences. The crime figures of the last five years are hereunder:
|
 |
The northern area of this district shares its border with Giridih district. This area comprises of Tundi P.S., Topchanchi P.S., Hariharpur P.S. and Barwadda P.S. These Police Stations are affected by extremist activities. This area is covered with forest, hills and mountains situated on the north of Grand Trunk Road. This range of hills is attached to Parasnath Hills, which lies under the district of Giridih. The extremists move in these hilly areas connected to Parasnath Hills taking advantage of the terrain. From the perspective of the spread of extremism, Topchanchi and Tundi P.S. of this district have been placed under extremely sensitive category whereas Barwadda, Rajganj and Hariharpur Police Stations have been kept under sensitive category. Three Pickets, namely, Maniyadih, Pokharia and Benagaria under Tundi Police Station have been established to combat the extremist menace. Besides, armed force from Dhanbad district has also been deputed to the adjoining Harladih Picket of Giridih district. As a precautionary and counter offensive measure all the police stations, out posts and pickets in naxal-affected areas have been fortified with boundary walls, turrets, trenches and barbed wires. Sufficient number of police personnel with latest arms and ammunitions have been deputed to face any contingency.
