In today's world, Police work in difficult environment. The single most important challenge in today's world is the management of change itself. Social, economic and political changes throw up increasingly complex challenges which exert a great deal of stress on existing fault lines in our traditional society. In the last few years we have seen rapid urbanization in our country. This poses unique challenges because of the breakdown of traditional social orders which could restrain unlawful action. There is also the growth of mafias, urban gangs, drug trafficking, kidnapping and threats to the security of our women and senior citizens. Ranchi Police is working hard to cope-up with this inevitable change by updating itself and thereby securing a safe society for the denizens of Ranchi.
Ranchi Police is one of the best Police forces in the state. Being the state capital, Ranchi is always in the headlines. Ranchi Police has to be on its toes to keep the law and order and crime under control. Ranchi Police is putting its best in all spheres whether it is crime control, law and order or fighting
naxal menace. |

We can see the effort of Ranchi Police in crime control by observing the crime statistics. In the year 2007, the number of incidents of loot came down to 109 from 190 in the previous year. In the year 2007, Robbery
also came down to 191 from 221. Though thefts like motor vehicles thefts are increasing because of urbanization and growing materialistic tendency in the youth, Police is trying hard to control by forming special action
teams in this regard. Every denizen of Ranchi appreciated Ranchi Police when it recovered full amount of Rs. 1.5 crores which was looted in Syndicate Bank within 6 hrs of the incident taking place. So far Ranchi Police
has caught many gangs involved in road dacoity, house burglary, loot in shops etc,. By arresting many gangs like Birsa Toppo gang, Divakar Singh gang, Sajid Ansari gang and other gangs in Namkum, Tamad and Bundu, Ranchi Police controlled crime effectively.
The Ranchi Police is using all means like priority trials, disposal of pending
cases, Crime Control Act (CC Act) to contain the crime. Ranchi Police succeeded in effectively utilizing the CC Act against notorious criminals like Dhananjay Pradhan, Manoj Bhagat and Shravan Chauhan etc.
Ranchi Police is giving utmost priority to be a people friendly force. In this regard, Ranchi Police launched an innovative programme known as Friends Of Police (FOP) in which public became friends of Police and helped Police in maintaining law and order as well as crime control. It became a huge success and the recent Dusshera and Ramzan festivals are evidences for this. Ranchi Police celebrated the week (August 2nd to 8th ) as TraffikcWeek to make public aware of traffic rules. In this main targeted group is school going children. Other groups of society were also included in this programme. This turned out to be a huge success and people from all walks of life appreciated a lot the efforts of Ranchi Police in this regard.
Ranchi Police is in fore front in fighting with naxals. Many anti-naxal operations have been carried out so far. Ranchi Police launched many joint operations with West Bengal Police also. Special Operations like Beta, Tiger, Panther, Black Panther, Sigma, Clean, and Alpha-2 are some of most successful operations in which many naxal leaders were arrested and lot of arms and ammunition were recovered. Ranchi Police is doing community policing on massive scale in both rural and urban areas. Urban Community Policing is mainly targeted to include people in Policing to control the crime whereas rural community policing is targeting the containment of spread of naxal problem. Main thing is that Ranchi Police proved successful on both
fronts. Our utmost priority is to make the Police more people friendly and sensitive to the needs of the downtrodden section of society. Our Police force aspires to be prompt, sensitive, firm but courteous to general public".
With this background one can say the motto of Ranchi Police is apt which says.
"RANCHI POLICE - DEDICATED TO YOUR SERVICE AND SECURITY".

Major crime which is very frequent in the district of Ranchi is murder. In rural as well as urban Ranchi, due to “land related disputes”, murders have been reported in considerable number. Other major crimes like kidnapping for ransom, killing for Rangdari tax, threat for extortion, dacoities are also reported in high number. Due to dense forest and naxal problem, road robberies/ dacoities are committed in state highways.
The chart below depicts the general crime scenario of the district.
|
 |
As Ranchi district is sharing borders with other districts like Saraikhela, Chatra, Palamu, Bokaro, Jamshedpur and Purulia district of West Bengal (all are naxal affected areas), rural Ranchi is facing naxal problem in high intensity. Bundu sub-division is the most affected one. Bundu, Tamar, Sonahatu, Silli, Angada, Pithoria and Burmu police stations are under category A. Khelari, Sikidiri, Chanho, Kanke and Lapung police stations are under category B. Ormanjihi, Namkum, Mandar and Bero police stations are under category C (classification is done by Government on the basis of intensity of naxal problem).
At present, as Ranchi Police are dominating the area through regular Long Range Patrolling, combing operations and community policing, naxal activities are under control.
|
 |
Due to sincere dedication towards work, Ranchi Police has been able to achieve significant success in these years against naxals as well as other criminals.
The below table depicts the achievements of police in the form of numerals.
|
 |
In Community Policing:-
In this direction Ranchi Police has endeavored to reach all sections of the society. In this way police started doing many things, which include the following.
- Launched the program known as “Police at your Door”
Organizing police-public coordinating committees
Conducting police-public cooperation programs
Showing the evils of naxal problem to people through local dramas known as “Nukkad Natak”
Conducting workshops in schools to bring the awareness regarding traffic rules
Conducting friendly sports between police and public
Ranchi Police is also going to launch a new community policing program known as Frinend of Police(FOP). It provides opportunities for the ordinary citizen to contribute to crime prevention. Any member of the public, male or female, who is not involved in a civil or criminal case can become a member of FOP. The members of FOP can provide useful information leading to solving of crimes. FOP member can also act as a check on any abuse of police power because of easy accessibility of senior police officers. |
