Situated in between the two great religious places Kamana  ling Deoghar and Baba Basukinath at Dahijor under Mohanpur P.S of  Deoghar Distt., the 5th JAP Battalion;  erstwhile Bihar Militry Police-15 was founded in 1975 vide Home Police Bihar Govt's order no-511 dt- 22-1-1975. Earlier the place was in the form of an agricultural farm area and this place was earlier used as the refugee camo for the people coming from Bangladesh after the 1971 war. Many large tin shed were erceted and these tins have actually provided shelter fro the new bor battalion.

The Battalion was already formed on the 7th April 1975 with the epithet of Bihar Military Police-15 and the First Commandant  Shri Akhouri Himanchal Prasad Sinha issued the Force Order No-01 dt-07-05-1975 in his own handwriting establishing this Battalion. Presently there is no post of the Deputy Commandant since that post earlier created was transferred to Bihar Mounted Police, Patna and with the creation of Jharkhand thgis Battalion was also coroneted with the epithet of JAP-5.

SECURITY SCENARIO

Deoghar District has not witnessed any naxal violence in recent past;  however its  neighbouring districts like Giridih and Jamui in Bihar are badly naxal effected and  have  seen  many naxal carraiges in recent past.  Even  Dumka and Jamtara district are not thoroughly unaffected by the naxal activities. In this scenario, as the Battalion camp falls in the rural area and at least 10-11 km  away from the district headquarter; from security viewpoint it is very sensitive.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Since inception the Battalion has  won many  laurels in every field. Its jawans have not only shown their courage and valour in their fight against naxals and criminals but their contribution in sports and games have also been historic.

Shri Jagat Kumar Constable no-279 of the Battalion; hailing form village Thati of Dhanarua PS under Patna District was the first  from this Battalion to become martyr fighting against the naxalites in the year 1976. In his memory a Cinema Hall was constructed by the  voluntary contribution of the police men of this Battalion in which  movies are shown by means of  Projector. Presently, however; the hall is used as the Barrack of  JAP-9.

The following three Police men have been awarded President Gallantry Medal from the Battalion:-

Police 337 Md. Soaib Ali died in encounter with Naxalites in 1986 when Naxalites were fleeing after looting rifle from Zakhim Railway Station of Aurangabad District in Bihar.

Police 164 Navin Kumar Singh was killed in action while fighting  with the Chhangur Dusadh gang.

Havildar Kedar Nath Singh was also given President Gallantry Medal for his extraordinary bravery and chivalry.

Besides Jagat Singh 2 Havildar and 9 constable have already sacrificed their lives on the  altar of their duty. They are-

In the field of  sports and games also the achievements have been glorious. In 1982 the Battalion won Silver Medal  in  Police Deendayal  All India Rifle shooting Championship.

In 1985 Police Babujan Dewan won silver medal in the "First Aid to the injured - Ambulance Drill" category of the All India Police Duty Meet.

In the year 1990 Havildar Ramjanam Raut won Gold Medal in the All India Rifle Shooting Championship and enhanced the prestige  of not only the Battalion but also of Police and the State.
